We are the University of Tokyo English Speaking Society. A very good feature of E.S.S. is that you can join different sections! It is composed of Drama Section, Speech Section, and Discussion Section. You can have variety of experiences and interact with many different people!
In the Drama Section, we create plays in English. This is the only place at the University of Tokyo where you can perform musicals in English! First-year members mainly take on acting roles, performing in a world crafted by the backstage crew. What awaits you is the most immersive experience of your life — an extraordinary journey where you become someone entirely different. Even if you’ve never acted before, there is a plenty of support, and an unforgettable experience is waiting for you. If being in the spotlight isn’t your thing, there are still many ways to be involved behind the scenes. If you want to shine on stage with amazing friends, the Drama Section is the place for you!
In the Speech Section, our goal is to deliver better English speeches. To do so, your speech must be both logical and passionate. This skill is essential for public speaking, which is often required after graduation. Besides delivering speeches, you can participate in our activities in various ways, such as organizing speech contests. The Speech Section is a place where you can feel a sense of belonging. We welcome international students every year, and we are ready to welcome you, too! Here, you can take advantage of your English skills and learn Japanese from our members. We are waiting for you!
In the Discussion Section, we talk in small groups about various topics, asking each other questions and having fun conversations. There’s a wide range of English levels, so it’s easy to join in. Many Japanese students are here to improve their English speaking skills, so you can come and interact with the local students, as well as learn Japanese from them! Feel free to drop by anytime! We’re also planning future activities like exchanges with students from other universities and day trips to sightseeing spots around Tokyo.

We performs Nagasaki traditional dance, " Jaodori". Jaodori is a kind of dances, which performers swing the artificial dragon and mimic the movements of a dragon. It originally came from China but has been performed in Nagasaki for about 300 years. Nagasaki has a typical culture which was affected by China, Portugal, and Holland in Edo period. If you have an interest in Nagasaki culture, please contact and join us!
Todai Shimbun Foundation is an organisation that carries out newspaper production activities in the hands of University of Tokyo students.
We, ChorAkademie, practice choral music for the May Festival, Komaba Festival, and the regular concert, based on the music books brought by our seniors and teachers. What makes our group unique is that we are the only male chorus in the University of Tokyo. Since ancient times, choral singing was performed only by male voices, and the overtones heard when the frequencies of male voices were matched were considered to be the singing voice of an angel. Ours is the only choir that offers the charm of an old-fashioned chorus. Our group has a long history and has been requested by the University of Tokyo to perform ceremonies at entrance and graduation ceremonies. We also have deep exchanges with choirs from other universities, and every year we give a joint concert with the Meiji University Glee Club, Rikkyo University Glee Club, Waseda University Glee Club, Keio University Wagner Society Male Chorus, and Hosei University Arion Chorus at the regular concert of the Tokyo Six University Chorus Association. We also perform joint concerts with the Kyoto University Glee Club. We welcome both experienced and inexperienced chorus members. Let's sing “Todai” together!
